How to find the perfect wedding makeup look

You have booked in your makeup artist for your wedding and you are starting to visualise what makeup look you want to go for. Usually, the next step will be to organise a makeup trial where you and your makeup artist have the opportunity to design and plan your look ahead of the wedding day.

But how do you work out the best makeup look for you?!

Here are my tips in thinking about what makeup look will be best for you on your wedding day, so you can be prepared for your makeup trial and have no regrets!

The Whole Look

While makeup is a big part of the day, you want to consider the whole look:

  • The style of your wedding dress (eg, contemporary or traditional)

  • The plan for your hair (eg, relaxed or formal)

  • Any accessories you’ll be wearing (ie, style and colour)

  • The location of your wedding (eg, beach or farm)

  • The reception environment (eg, indoor or outdoor)

  • The style of your venue (eg, boho chic or romantic)

  • And any other factors that might influence your look

Unfortunately this can be a little tricky as you won’t see all the elements come together until your wedding day, but thinking about this information and sharing it with your makeup artist will help give some direction to your makeup look.

What’s your ‘usual’?

Your wedding day is such an important day where you want to feel like a queen, but at the same time you still want to be true to yourself and feel like you. Do you have a makeup look that you wear everyday? Or a makeup aspect you wear no matter what? For example, you may wear a bold black eyeliner everyday or pack a ton of highlighter on! So, you may feel uncomfortable if you choose to do something different on your wedding day. It’s best to maintain any makeup habits, routines or quirks that you already have - you are definitely going to feel more comfortable with them!

Makeup Dislikes

We are so quick to think of all the makeup looks we DO like, which can get confusing when comparing multiple makeup looks that are similar. Have a think about what you DON’T like in a makeup look, trying to identify the specifics. This might help narrow down the inspiration and help with finding the perfect look.

Colours and styles that suit you!

Have a look through photos of you at different events in different lighting to compare makeup styles and colours you have worn before. There may be some styles and colours that may suit you more than others. Looking at recent photos can help you find a look that might suit you best for your wedding day, or at least provide a starting point for you and your makeup artist. Of course as part of any makeup trial, your makeup artist will discuss colours and styles that suit you based on skin type, facial shape and your preferences.
